What it is

Vis is the farthest inhabited island of this group from the mainland, closed to foreign visitors as a Yugoslav military base until 1989 — which kept the resort development that reached the closer islands first off it entirely. Komiža, on the west coast, is the departure point for boat trips to the Blue Cave on nearby Biševo.

Who it suits

Vis suits travellers after an island that still feels undeveloped — small hotels, working fishing harbours, no big marina scene — rather than a nightlife base. The long crossing time from Split keeps casual day-trippers to a minimum outside the Blue Cave excursion boats themselves.

When to go

The Blue Cave's light effect is strongest with the sun high, so late-morning trips see it best; visit outside July–August if the long crossing and full boats are a concern — the Split car ferry runs 140 minutes, one of the longer crossings in this batch (Lastovo's Split car ferry runs longer still).

Split–Vis (Jadrolinija, car ferry, 140 min) is the only way to bring a car, one of the longer domestic ferry crossings among these fifteen destinations; a passenger catamaran covers the same route in under 90 minutes without a car.
