Mljet
What it is
Mljet is a long, forested island in the far south of this coast, roughly a third of it a national park around two interconnected saltwater lakes, Veliko and Malo Jezero, with a small islet monastery in the middle of one. There are no large towns; Pomena and Polače sit at the park's edge, and Sobra, on the eastern coast, is the main port.
Who it suits
Mljet suits a day trip or a quiet few nights more than a base for nightlife or shopping — the draw is the park, cycling around the lakes, and swimming off the rocks, not a town to wander after dark.
When to go
Summer for swimming in the lakes, noticeably calmer than the open sea outside; the park is at its most walkable and least crowded in the shoulder months of May, June and September.
How to get there
Bringing a car means Prapratno–Sobra (Jadrolinija, car ferry, 45 min), leaving from the Pelješac peninsula rather than Split directly. Passenger catamarans out of Dubrovnik call at both Sobra and Polače without a car, landing closer to the national park entrance at Polače.
