Korčula

What it is

Korčula is a green, wine-growing island off the Pelješac peninsula. Its walled old town sits on a small peninsula built in a fishbone street plan that channels the sea breeze through the centre, and it's the disputed birthplace of Marco Polo. Inland, Pošip and Grk vineyards cover the western half of the island around Smokvica and Čara.

Who it suits

Korčula town suits a compact, walkable old town with real summer nightlife and a cathedral square that hosts concerts and the moreška sword dance. Vela Luka, on the far western end, is a working fishing and shipbuilding town more than a resort. Lumbarda, just east of Korčula town, has the island's sandy beaches.

When to go

Late spring and early autumn suit the wine country and walking without the July–August crowds; peak summer fills the old town's square and the catamarans out of Split and Dubrovnik. The short car-ferry channel crossing keeps running through the season without the long queues of the coast's bigger car lines.

How to get there

The direct way in with a car isn't from Split: Orebić–Dominče (Jadrolinija, car ferry, 20 min) crosses the narrow Pelješac Channel from the peninsula, itself reached by road since the Pelješac Bridge opened, bypassing the Neum corridor. A short passenger-only crossing, Orebić–Korčula (15 min), lands closer to the old town. Passenger catamarans also run direct into Korčula town from Split and Dubrovnik.
