Cres

What it is

Cres is a long, narrow, sparsely populated island known for its griffon vulture reserve near Beli in the north, and for the short bridge at Osor at its southern tip that carries the road on to Lošinj. Cres town itself is a quiet stone harbour on the west coast.

Who it suits

Cres suits travellers after quiet and nature — the vultures, the interior's oak forests — and drivers using it as the road route through to Lošinj, more than a beach-resort stay in its own right.

When to go

The griffon vulture reserve is most active in the warmer months; the Merag crossing from Krk can queue in peak summer, tracked live below.

How to get there

Two car ferries reach Cres: Brestova–Porozina from Istria (Jadrolinija, 20 min) at the island's north end, and Valbiska (Krk)–Merag (Jadrolinija, 25 min) at the south, the more direct route from the Rijeka/Krk side. Merag is one of the coast's live queue-camera ports, tracked below.
