Brač

What it is

Brač is the largest island in central Dalmatia, quarried for the pale stone that built Diocletian's Palace in Split and, further afield, the White House. Its best-known sight is Zlatni Rat, the shingle spit at Bol that shifts shape with the wind, below Vidova Gora, the highest peak on any Adriatic island. Inland it's dry scrubland, vineyards and olive groves.

Who it suits

Supetar, the main ferry port, is an ordinary Dalmatian town with a real local rhythm outside the harbourfront. Bol, on the south coast, is the windsurfing-and-beach side of the island — busier, pricier, and built around Zlatni Rat. Milna and Sutivan, on the north and west coasts, are quieter marina villages that suit sailors more than beachgoers.

When to go

July and August bring the bura and maestral winds that make Bol a windsurfing draw, along with the island's fullest ferries and highest prices; June and September keep the swimming weather with a lighter crowd. Car ferries fill on summer weekends, so book the Split crossing ahead if driving.

How to get there

Split–Supetar (Jadrolinija, car ferry, 50 min) is the main way to bring a car; a faster passenger catamaran covers the same crossing in about 25 minutes. Bol and Jelsa are reached by catamaran only, without a car. Brač's other car crossing, Sumartin–Makarska, connects to the mainland Riviera to the south rather than to Split, useful if you're coming from that direction instead.
